Originally from Minnesota, Mike and his family moved a lot during his childhood.  While growing up, Mike lived in Minnesota, Iowa, and Massachusetts.  As a result, Mike was taught by his family to be independent and how to work hard in order to provide for his family.  One of Mike's first jobs was in the construction field with his parents.  Mike attended Catawba College in Salisbury, NC where he graduated with a degree in Political Science and Pre-Law.  Mike received an academic scholarship to attend Catawba College and during his tenure there he did a significant amount of volunteer work.  Mike also received an academic scholarship to Penn State University for law school.  He was a two time Miller Center Public Interest recipient during his time at Penn State.  Following graduation, Mike moved to Asheville, NC in 2006 where he began work at the Public Defender's Office in Buncombe County.  Mike also spent  a few years working with the District Attorney's Office in Haywood, Macon, Swain, Jackson, Graham, Cherokee, and Clay counties.  Mike left the Public Defender's Office in 2007 and began his own practice shortly thereafter.  During Mike's career as an attorney he has litigated voluminous criminal and civil trials and has assisted his clients in collecting over a million dollars in damages.

Besides his legal work, Mike is a believer in giving back to the community.  Mike is an active board member and the treasurer of the Buncombe County Alternatives (BCA).  BCA works with at risk youth to ensure that they will not be involved in the criminal justice system in the future.  Mike also supports various youth activities including softball, baseball, and football because he believes that every child deserves an opportunity to develop into the very best person they can be.
